Many of the video games you enjoy are probably owned or invested by Tencent.
Who is Tencent?
Tencent is a Chinese internet and technology company and is the biggest video game publisher. Here is a list of video game companies they have invested in.
- Riot Games. Tencent acquired the company behind League of Legends in 2011. Initially, Tencent acquired 93% in February 2011 and bought the remaining 7% in December 2015.
- Epic games. Tencent owns 40% of Epic Games since 2012.
- PUBG or Player’s Unknown Battleground by Korean Bluhole. Tencent doesn’t have a majority share, but has invested in the game and owns approximately 11.5%.
- Tencent has invested 5% in Ubisoft.
- They also have approximately a 5% share of Blizzard Activision.
- Tencent has most shares of Grinding Gear, the company that has developed Path of Exile.
- Tencent owns 10% of Paradox Interactive.
- And this last one is not a video game company but a platform that – almost – every gamer knows: Discord. Tencent owns 38% of Discord, which, considering the recent TikTok developments, meaning the US bill for banning TikTok in the USA due to security issues, what is their opinion regarding Discord, or even Reddit, which Tencent owns 11%?
